a touristy day at the ferry building

D and I took a stroll (somewhat, 3 miles past Fort Mason through Fisherman’s Wharf, then along the Embarcadero) down to the Ferry Building on Saturday…

First stop… Taylor’s Refresher, the urban version of their original 1920′s roadside eatery off of Highway 29 in Saint Helena.

Happily fed we decided to wander around and pick up some goodies for dinner… organic beets, arugula and blood oranges were the initial ingredients for a salad, and then we headed to the Cowgirl Creamery to pick up some fresh burrata as well.  We also picked up some organic chicken breasts which we decided we would do “fried-chicken” style by marinating in a greek yogurt & dijon mustard sauce, and then coating in a panko-pecorino romano blend before baking.

At this point we needed a little jolt, so we hit up Blue Bottle Coffee for two of their “Gibraltars”… a shot-like combination between a latte & a cappuccino, finished off with their feather-like foam signature.

To finish off this touristy day?  A cable-car ride home of course…

ding ding!

marmite

Marmite – The ads emphasize the “love it or hate it” reaction to this spread – oh and how I love love love it.   On toast.  With butter (preferably Kerrygold). But what is it you may ask?  Marmite is a sticky, dark brown paste that’s made from yeast extract, a byproduct of beer brewing.  It’s very salty… a little goes a very very long way.  I know, I know, it’s not the most appetizing description but the taste is absolutely one of a kind.  I’ve loved it since I was a child, but rarely do I meet anyone else who shares this fondness.  Try it- you may be surprised!

And Paddington Bear is the spokesperson!  He was a childhood favorite of mine.

7×7 magazine’s 2010 big eat sf – part 2

So it turns out that not only will I be trying the few places I listed in my last post, but all 100 of the Big Eat list!  I plan on participating in 7×7′s Big Eat 2010 Scavenger Hunt. There’s this new website called “Foodspotting” where you can spot your food via your iphone, so the goal is to hit up all 100 of the Big Eat selections in a year. Definitely do-able.  There’s one girl who already has tagged 28 of the 100, but I’m assuming she’s unemployed.  I don’t need to be the first to do it, but think it’ll be fun to try to hit all 100!  Click here for more on the contest!  And if you want to follow along here’s my Foodspotting link: www.foodspotting.com/saltandpeppersf!
